ROBOT RUMBLE! Museum of Life and Science

Saturday, April 13, 2013    |     10 am – 4 pm

Are you ready to Robot Rumble? Enter the arena and test out the Museum’s fleet of combat robots. Play robot hockey with the Carolina Combat Robots, and meet other members of the Robot Fighting League. See underwater robots that explore the ocean, marvel at medical robots that save lives, and take part in LEGO® Robotics workshops.

Hands-on Outdoor
Robotic Demonstrations

10 am – 4 pm
“The Battle Dome” aka the Picnic Dome
  • Sumo and Obstacle Road Course Robot Arenas
  • Visions of the Future from the Past: new collection of vintage toy and tactical robots donated from thecollection of friend to the Museum, the late Professor Frank Cheney.
  • Rock Em Sock Em Robots™: Come battle it out in the ring with this blast from the past game.
  • Get a Grip: Try some simple everyday challenges using robot claws and arms. It’s not as easy as you think!
  • You, Robot? Many depictions of robots have been displayed in science fiction media over the years. Use some reclaimed materials to create some robot “wearables”.
  • Hex Bugs! Experience the fun with these tiny robots that react to its environment!

Ken's Robots

Meet local Robot Enthusiast Ken Boone from Triangle Amateur Robots and join him for his presentation of “What is a Robot” for children of all ages.  Followed by demonstrations of some of KensRobots collection of educational, consumer, and homemade robots.

Presentations will go on throughout the event.

    Carolina Combat Robots

Come learn about the sport of Combat Robotics and see some of the CCR fleet that compete at the national level. East Coast Bot Hockey will provide hands-on demos.

Carolina Combat Robots is a group of individuals that enjoy, compete in, and promote Combat Robotics and Bot Hockey. If you would like to join CCR, Contact Us. No joining fee, just willing people helping each other enjoy the sport.

    SeaPerch

Take the controls of a SeaPerch underwater ROV. Drive it around the pool, dive, turn, and try to pick up a ring from the pool floor!

Designed for middle and high school students, the SeaPerch program provides students with the opportunity to learn about robotics, engineering, science, and mathematics (STEM) while building the underwater ROV as part of a science and engineering technology curriculum.

The AUVSI Foundation manages the SeaPerch program through a grant provided by the Office of Naval Research, to promote STEM programs.

    NC State Underwater Robotics

First LEGO® League Teams and Scholastic Robotics

    • First Robotics Competition Team 587 Hedgehogs, Orange High School, Hillsborough , NC
    • Efland-Cheeks RoboticsFourth and fifth grade students from the Efland-Cheeks Elementary School Maker Club will teach visitors about force and motion using LEGO® Robotics. Using LEGO® NXT Mindstorms pieces, visitors will be able to assemble and program machines to complete various tasks that illustrate Newton’s Laws. Students will also host “Robot Read-Alouds” in the Butterfly House for children aged 3-6.
    • Robot Read Alouds with Efland-Cheeks Elementary School Maker Club
      11 am, 1 pm
    • FIRST® Robotics Team 2059
      The Hitchhikers
The Hitchhikers are a FIRST® Robotics team consisting of students from several schools in the Wake County area, with many from Athens Drive high School. The team will have this year’s competition robot, Trillian, on display which is fresh from two regional competitions this year. For the competitions the robot had to shoot Frisbees at targets as well as climb a steel pole pyramid.
    • VEX Robotics Competition (VRC) Exhibition Scrimmage
Come enjoy the show as area Middle and High School teams compete against each other in the VEX Sack Attack Challenge. Pick a team a cheer as they try to move as many 1/2 pound bags as they can to the three different scoring zones. Local schools participate in the Triangle Area Robotics league. Find out how to join in the fun next season. Sponsored byviaRobotics
    • FTC Robotics
FTC is designed for those who want to compete head to head, using a sports model. Teams of up to 10 students are responsible for designing, building, and programming their robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. The robot kit is reusable from year-to-year and is programmed using a variety of languages. Teams, including coaches, mentors and volunteers, are required to develop strategy and build robots based on sound engineering principles.
    • LEGO® SUMO Exhibition Tournament and hands-on demosTriangle Sumobots 2013 will have over 90 competitors from around 20 different teams. The teams come from Triangle Area schools and home school groups. We will compete in two divisions of single elimination matches, with a round of finalist matches in the afternoon.
