Baby Shower decor: Make Chinese Lantern Poms

I just had my baby shower for our soon to be newest family addition.
I decided to make my own decorations for this special event.
And WOW did I save a ton of money and have great fun in this process!

Lets get started!

Supplies you will need:
Chinese paper lantern, 1-2 packs white coffee filters, acrylic craft paint, water, paint brush, cup, foil pie pan, glue gun, aprox. 10 glue sticks, ribbon
Approximate time to make: 1 1/2-2 hours including drying time.

Step 1:
The Coffee filters need to be dyed,
mix 1 teaspoon paint to 1 cup water
then pour into pie pan

Step 2:
Take 10 or so coffee filters at a time, and completely soak into dye solution (3-5 seconds)
Then squeese out as much as the dye solution as you can

Step 3:
Peel filters apart and lay flat to dry,
note: you can leave them 2-3 thick as it can be difficult to pull apart each one. I dried mine over the floor under a ceiling fan. It took 30 minutes for them to dry.

Step 4:
Get your glue gun ready! Fold each paper in half and then put a drop of glue in the lower fold, fold into a quarter, and repeat with all of your now dry filters.

Now begin applying your filters with a drop of glue on your lantern....repeat in a pattern. I kept about an inch between them for a fuller finished look.

Continue adding filters all the way around, until it is completely covered in filters.

Now that you have completely glued, you can begin to separate and squash your filters into shape.
There is no right or wrong here, you just slightly open and squeeze.

Finally, find the center hole of your lantern, and tie a ribbon so that you can hang your master piece!

Notes: We found 3 pack lanterns at Party City for $6.99
Coffee filters were the $1 store brand, white
We used the small 4 oz bottles of acrylic craft paint. Apple, Folkart brands work great, you can find at Michaels, JoAnnes or Ac Moore.
I used push pins to secure my poms to the ceiling. They were a little too heavy for tape.

Please let us know your thoughts, or how your paper pom project went in the notes below!
